The incident unfolded at Poonam Cluster Society, where several Muslim families had arranged a temporary shed to accommodate between 25 and 50 goats ahead of Eid al-Adha on May 28. However, officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation demolished the structure on Monday, citing violations of residential bylaws that prohibit animal slaughter activities within housing complexes and residential premises.
The demolition sparked strong reactions among residents and community groups, further intensifying on Tuesday when members associated with the Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal gathered outside the society and staged protests. The situation took a provocative turn when demonstrators allegedly carried a live piglet during the protest, escalating tensions between groups and triggering a physical confrontation.
The clash soon turned chaotic, leaving a local coordinator injured during the confrontation. Police personnel rushed to the scene and carried out a mild baton charge to disperse the crowd and prevent the violence from spreading further. Authorities subsequently seized the animals involved in the dispute and shifted the goats to officially approved locations designated for Eid-related activities.
In response to the growing unrest, law enforcement agencies deployed nearly 200 police personnel across the area by Wednesday to maintain order and prevent any further communal disturbance. Security arrangements were tightened around the housing society and surrounding localities as officials monitored the situation closely.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing friction surrounding religious practices, civic regulations, and community sensitivities within densely populated urban residential spaces. The clashes in Mira Road have raised fresh concerns about maintaining communal harmony during major religious observances in metropolitan regions.
